2009 - ongoing
The ‘robot cellist’, a non-human entity at the intersection of performer and instrument, consists of two industrial robotic arms playing a cello. The composition explores the specific and unique playing techniques afforded by this system, underlines the idiomatic potential of the robot cellist and investigates its anthropomorphic characteristics and their scenographic implications. The robot cellist has developed individual playing style and techniques along with a reflexive compositional perspective.
Since its inception in 2009, the robot cellist has been developed as a long-term artistic and research project, forming part of the author’s doctoral studies and ongoing compositional practice. The system has been realized across a wide range of formats, including solo performances, installations, and collaborations with symphony orchestras, string quartets, and pianists, as well as within electronic and popular music contexts alongside leading EDM artists. It has appeared in concert halls, festivals, museums, and large-scale media productions, and has been widely featured through international broadcast and press channels. Across these contexts, the robot cellist functions not merely as a technical apparatus, but as a flexible artistic entity through which questions of embodiment, agency, and musical authorship are explored.
